In the spirit of John Muir, as well as our tagline, a humane tourist adheres to his poignant words: “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time.

A humane tourist is one who’s educated about the plight of animals worldwide where it concerns their actions, visits, and dollars spent, and becomes aware of so many other ways to enjoy their travels without supporting the ongoing abuse and exploitation of animals.

We endeavor to teach travelers about the cruelty behind souvenirs and trinkets, aquariums, bullfights, fiestas, and bull runs, carriage rides, circuses, pulling contests, croc farms, elephant and camel rides, animal fairs, animal fights, horse and other animal racing, rodeos, selfies abuses, swim with dolphins programs, zoos, eating ‘exotic’ animals, and animals on display.

You will learn what to do instead of those things. Rather than participate in animal-abusing activities, you will discover the beauty in both attending and supporting humane events—such as astronomy trips and star-gazing, beach cleanups, bike riding, bird watching, book readings, camping, canoeing and kayaking, conferences, cruises, demos, dining, expos and exhibits, film festivals, fireworks, galas and fund-raisers, hiking and trails, kite flying, lectures and presentations, movies and plays, museums and monuments, national parks, nature-gazing, nature reserves, photography workshops, picnicking, rafting and tubing, sanctuaries, scuba diving, skiing and sledding, sky diving and gliding, snorkeling, tree-planting, vegan fests, volunteering, whale watching, wild horse viewing, wildlife safaris, yoga and exercise, young people activities, and a whole lot more!

Championed for years by Gil Michaels, founder of Animal Guardians, Laura has been active on behalf of animals in every way possible for the past 55 years—from their hands-on rescue to their plight on the world stage, in legislation, education, as a student and a teacher, through her writing and her graphic design, on foot and behind the scenes. She founded and published The Animals Voice Magazine for more than 35 years with Mr. Michaels, producing in excess of 100 issues in its international run, and she created the web sites for both The Animals Voice and Humane Travel. Laura was inducted into the Animal Rights Hall of Fame in 2004.
